Carrant Brook Junior School

Religious Education

Statement of Intent

In our RE teaching at Carrant Brook Junior School, we develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the major world faiths and we address the fundamental questions in life. Children reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding. We help children learn from religions as well as about religions. By following the ‘The Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus’ we allow our children to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living. RE also supports the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.

The Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus approaches the teaching of RE through three core elements: Making Sense of Beliefs, Making Connections and Understanding the Impact. These set the context for an open exploration of religion and belief. At Carrant Brook we use the Understanding Christianity scheme of work to ensure all areas of the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus are covered. Our curriculum is designed in a coherent and sequenced way that allows our children to understand the beliefs of others and make connections between their own values.
